While there I took a series of workshops in interaction design at CIID. During the first workshop we experimented with stop motion animation to help evidence a particular concept. My first attempt at stop motion was a video created in 20 minutes using post-its, a white paper backdrop, and a laptop. The first major assignment was to come up with an idea that brings the power of computers to the physical world, and to create a video in one day evidencing this concept. Our idea was a service that creates social experiences around music using public spaces – a new version of the jukebox. Another workshop had us investigating Processing – an open source programming language. Since we only had a week to learn the fundamentals, each assignment was extremely quick. The workshop was capped with an exhibition of everyone's work tiled in a mosaic. The ongoing genocide and general brutality in the Darfur region of Sudan inspired this guerilla campaign which was designed to get people to write their political leaders, asking them to become more active. In a guerilla style campaign we decided to create newspaper clippings with provocative headlines that cause the reader to picture what would happen if our government also openly sponsored rape and genocide of Blacks here in the states. We realized that African-Americans have a long history of fighting the kinds of injustices that the Black Sudanese were dealing with. So the "articles" became relevant from that perspective. In response to this, we took the campaign to email and contacted everyone we could think of—family, friends, acquaintances and even random strangers. The response was overwhelming. An intense dialogue ensued, addressing a broad range of topics and opinions. The heated discussions again showed how passionate people are about this serious issue, and why it is so important for the public to be informed. The campaign went from exclusively guerilla to a multi-dimensional movement.
