Student scientist Connor Lynch wanted to find a way to reduce the amount of resources needed in fuel. Connor posited that planes with a lifting fuselage design would reduce drag more than traditional designs, thus lowering the amount of power needed to propel a plane, and the consumption of fuel. He tested this hypothesis by building a wind tunnel and three aircraft. Wind is a powerful symbol so I decided to investigate the visual possibilities involving wind currents. Ultimately I want people to begin to understand the aerodynamics of modern day aircraft, and to question the effects on the environment. I began by comparing the two airplane models from the study by positioning them next to one another. Then I started drawing layers of wind around each model. The blended wing model has a direct wind pattern, while the tube model is much more swirly due to its lower lift to drag ratio. Layers of wind are color-coded to loosely represent the effect on air quality. I wanted to convey the blended wing model as efficient by incorporating cleaner colors of green and blue wind, while the tube model struggles to move out of the polluted grays and orange. While there I took a series of workshops in interaction design at CIID. During the first workshop we experimented with stop motion animation to help evidence a particular concept. My first attempt at stop motion was a video created in 20 minutes using post-its, a white paper backdrop, and a laptop. The first major assignment was to come up with an idea that brings the power of computers to the physical world, and to create a video in one day evidencing this concept. Our idea was a service that creates social experiences around music using public spaces – a new version of the jukebox. Another workshop had us investigating Processing – an open source programming language. Since we only had a week to learn the fundamentals, each assignment was extremely quick. The ongoing genocide and general brutality in the Darfur region of Sudan inspired this guerilla campaign which was designed to get people to write their political leaders, asking them to become more active. In a guerilla style campaign we decided to create newspaper clippings with provocative headlines that cause the reader to picture what would happen if our government also openly sponsored rape and genocide of Blacks here in the states. We realized that African-Americans have a long history of fighting the kinds of injustices that the Black Sudanese were dealing with. So the "articles" became relevant from that perspective. In response to this, we took the campaign to email and contacted everyone we could think of—family, friends, acquaintances and even random strangers. The response was overwhelming. The heated discussions again showed how passionate people are about this serious issue, and why it is so important for the public to be informed.
